Monticello Opera House
In Memorium
With a heavy heart, MadCo says goodbye to our dear friend, Jack Bulloch. Jack performed in several MadCo shows: Creepy Crawlies, Children's Theatre; New Years Fundraiser shows for the Monticello Opera House; Oklahoma; and in two Christmas Spectacular shows, where he even protrayed "Scrooge". Jack was the perfect straight man and took the teasing with a twinkle in his eye. He was a joy to be around. He will be missed.
Thank you, Jack, for all of your love and for sharing your talents with us. We will never forget you!

The Adventures of Lucas the Human, an original show by MadCo students Benjamin Britton and Abigail Boyd. This show was presented in July 2020. All rehearsals and performances were safely conducted outside wearing face shields.
OUR STORY: When COVID-19 blindsided the world, like everyone else in American theater, we closed our studio doors and moved to online Zoom classes for musical comedy, voice and piano lessons on Facebook Messenger Video and Facetime, and pre-recorded dance classes that we provided for our students in a Private Group on FaceBook. Originally, we had planned auditions for Shrek, Jr which was to be our children's show offering in 2020. We usually perform during the annual Watermelon Festival held in Jefferson County, FL every June. When our Annual Recital was cancelled, our auditions for Shrek, Jr were cancelled, the Watermelon Festival cancelled, our library performances were cancelled, the summer camps that usually watch our children's show cancelled, our community service programs cancelled at the local nursing and retirement homes, we realized that a performance this year might not happen. And then the final blow. The publisher wouldn't give the rights to Shrek, Jr as a filmed performance. We pretty much thought we were going to have to sit 2020 out.
But then, our Director, Melanie Mays, remembered an original script that we'd read during our musical comedy class, written by two of her students, Benjamin Britton and Abigail Boyd. It was definitely a work in progress and needed most of the songs written, developed and orchestrated. So, Ms. Mays, and 18 year old Benjamin and Abigail started meeting via Zoom in May and after 5 drafts of the script from Benjamin and Abigail finishing a song per week and sending it off to our arranger, Tod Barnard, we had a show! The cast was limited to 18 children and teens and 1 adult from our usual cast of 45 students! We decided it would be safer to do without crew and a stage manager, asking a few parents to stay backstage, wearing face masks, to help with changes while the cast handled scene changes. Rehearsals began June 15 via Zoom. Live rehearsals were held outside with cast members wearing face shields, standing in hula hoops to stay spaced apart to sing and learn choreography. And then the rain began! So we held rehearsals indoors in a large church Parish Hall so we could maintain proper spacing. The rain continued during tech week, but the cast patiently waited for it to end while our rented outdoor stage was mopped, and sound and lighting reset. We limited our audiences to 50 people per show and even the audience was spaced apart in 6' circles, 6' apart. We did four performances with both evening shows sold out! This let us know that our audience was ready for entertainment and they were willing to bring their own lawn chairs, picnics, drinks, and brave the heat, mosquitoes, and rain.
Every show has a budget, and even though this was an original show, partially sponsored by a grant from the State of Florida, Division of Cultural Affairs, we still had expenses. Even with discounts from our sponsors Music Masters for wireless mics; stage from Tasicon; and the Downtown Lot from L. Gary Wright, LLC and the support of our parents, we still need your help! As most producers know, it's next to impossible to cover costs with only 50 people allowed per show. So, we decided to video the production and make it available for those who didn't get to participate in the joy of safely being back on stage. You may watch this show for free. But please consider donating, any amount, so that we can cover our costs, help keep our studio open so that we can employ our dance, theater and music teachers later this Fall, and help with scholarships for students who may have trouble paying for their classes. We need you, so please donate what you can!
And finally, if you are a theater group and like what you see, contact us for the rights to perform The Adventures of Lucas the Human or Don't Trash Your Mother Earth. These shows are adaptable for small and large casts, male and female roles, with songs that are easy to perform and learn, and a good messages about friendship and being yourself! Our Children's Company performs annually in June at the Jefferson County Watermelon Festival. Past offerings include Seussical, the Musical; The Wizard of Oz; Alice in Wonderland; The Tale of Peter Rabbit (and Benjamin Bunny); and original works such as SuperKids; 2014: Space Oddity; Dragon Breath; High Tide: A Musical Pirate's Tale (ARGHHH!); The Unhappy Hippopotamus; Creepy Crawlies; Hot Dogs, Cool Cats; Don't Trash Your Mother Earth; and Three Little Pigs, the Musical. Opportunities are given to budding writers and musicians to write and compose the book, music, and lyrics for some of the children's shows and then see them produced on the Opera House stage. Not only are the children's shows a big hit at the local summer festival, but summer camps from Tallahassee book in early January each year to be able to attend the children's theater. This usually adds an additional week of sold out performances to the schedule. MadCo's dance, piano, accordion, voice, and Musical Comedy students perform in an annual Spring Recital at the Monticello Opera House to sold out crowds. |
