Melanie Mays, Founding Director of MadCo, is a dance/voice/acting teaching professional in the Tallahassee/Monticello area. She moved to Tallahassee in 2003 from NYC where she worked as an AEA singer/actor/dancer/musician. Prior to NYC, she was based out of the Kansas City and Chicago areas since 1978. Melanie has been a Union Member in good standing since 1982, belonging to AEA and SAG/AFTRA. She's performed all over the United States in tours, regional theaters, TV, commercials, and industrials. Melanie performed in over 100 musicals since the age of 7 from chorus to lead roles, most recently as "Vera Sanders" in Smoke on the Mountain (director/music director), “Adrianna" in Comedy of Errors, presented by Southern Shakespeare Company at Cascades Park in Tallahassee, FL, April 2016, and "Roxie" in Chicago (director). She's choreographed and directed 50+ shows for MadCo at the Monticello Opera House since 2007. Her degree in music is from the University of Missouri at Kansas City, Conservatory of Music. She's worked as a teaching professional in music, theater, and dance since 1982, teaching at various studios and school districts including: City In Motion, KCMO; Music Arts Institute, Independence, MO; Hale Cook Science/Math Magnet School, KCMO; Jefferson Middle/High School, Monticello, FL; Thomasville Center for the Arts, Thomasville, GA; Jefferson Somerset Charter School; and MadCo Studios, Monticello, FL. She teaches ballet, jazz, tap, Broadway-style dance; voice; musical comedy; acting for adults, teens, and children; piano and accordion. Melanie is a Certified Pilates instructor as well. She also plays guitar, banjo, mandolin, string bass and alto sax. Melanie works as a grant writer, successfully writing and administering multiple grants for Jefferson Arts Gallery, MadCo, and The Artist Series of Tallahassee. Besides running MadCo Studio, Melanie served on the Board for the Monticello Opera House (3 terms: 9 years). She is currently the Executive Director for The Artist Series of Tallahassee, bringing national and international chamber musicians to Tallahassee for a six-concert season, annually. Melanie wears many hats as a producer, director, choreographer, grant writer, musician, arranger, composer, lyricist, model, spokesperson, actor, singer, dancer.
